Conan Doyle
For 23 years Conan Doyle was a resident of Crowborough

Living in Windlesham Manor, near the golf course. His house is now a residential home, but in those days it was a family home and frequently visited by people from a wide circle, such as Rudyard Kipling, James Barrie and P.G.Wodehouse.
Conan Doyles fame rests largely on the Sherlock Holmes stories, which have been translated into many languages throughout the world - in fact the character he created is far better known than the author himself.
Sir Arthur was one of Britains most distinguished writers. Whilst he is internationally famous as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, he also wrote historical novels, plays, military history and numerous pamphlets and articles on matters of interest.
Some of his works are part of the educational literature studied in Japans schools.
In memory of Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle, a trust was created in 1997. Its first task was to erect a full size statue in the centre of Crowborough, by the international scultor and local resident, David Cornell. This statue can now be seen at Crowborough Cross.
